Wanted: 400,000 truck drivers

The U.S. trucking industry will need to hire about 200,000 drivers by the end of this year, and will need to add another 200,000 by the end of 2011, according to the state of logistics report from the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.

Study Finds Factories, Exports to Boost Freight Through 2021

Fueled by renewed growth in the export and manufacturing sectors, trucking will resume solid growth between now and 2021, according to a new study released on May 13.
The latest Freight Forecast report, commissioned by ATA and written by IHS Global Insight and Martin Labbe Associates, projected freight tonnage growth across all transport modes of 25% and growth of 30% for trucking between now and 2021. Total tonnage across all modes fell 14% last year from 2008 levels.

Porfirio Colindres has worked in construction and cleaning jobs long enough to weather several economic downturns, starting with 1989 when he moved to the United States from El Salvador. But the prolonged one where he now lives, near Boise, Idaho, has made steady work hard to find since 2007
This month, after a 150-hour course, Colindres earned his commercial driver's license, or CDL, and started looking for a truck-driving job.
The hiring outlook is improving for trucking, experts say, and it is attracting many people from fields where jobs have dried up. As many professions become more specialized, truck driving continues to require few classroom-based skills.

Truck Tonnage Jumps 7.5%

U.S. truck tonnage jumped 7.5% in March from a year ago, the fourth straight year-over-year increase, American Trucking Associations said.
The increase was the biggest since January 2005, and in the first quarter tonnage rose 4.9% from the same period last year, ATA said late Tuesday in its monthly seasonally adjusted for-hire truck tonnage index.

economic recovery is moving forward and offering hope that the second quarter will be even stronger.
Earnings rose 57% at Werner Enterprises Inc., by 24% at Landstar System Inc., 22% at J.B. Hunt Transport
Services Inc., 20% at Ryder System Inc. and 5.1% at Knight Transportation. Forward Air reported a profit and
reversed a year-ago loss.

Hero Truck Driver Saves Girl's Life

When Werner Enterprises truck driver Dave Nelson made the decision to pull off the road to help a stranded motorist recently, he saved the life of a seven-year-old girl.
Vicki Carter and her mother, Pam, were traveling along Interstate 20 near Birmingham, Ala., on the way to pick up father and husband Air Force Captain Ryan Carter in Texas when their car ran off the road and hit a sign. Pam jumped out of the car and tried to flag down help for her daughter, but only Nelson stopped
“She was literally out in the road,” Nelson recalls. He moved Pam Carter to safety as she explained that her daughter was still in the car and needed help.
